In 2017, Michigan Saves reached a major milestone by financing more than $100 million in energy efficiency and renewable energy improvements. Founded in 2009 and issuing its first loan in 2010 for just over $3,000, Michigan Saves has been striving to encourage and empower as many Michiganders as possible to bring energy improvements to their home or dwelling.

The organization’s president and CEO, Mary Templeton, said it was difficult to overstate the accomplishment’s significance.

“We’ve created an entire network of contractors, lenders, and partners, which is a distant dream for most states,” she said. “When we set out to jumpstart an energy improvement marketplace to make smart energy projects accessible for more people—there was virtually nothing like it in the country. Even though we now have some very successful peers, it’s still a pretty small club.”

To celebrate the occasion, the founders, partners, and customers of Michigan Saves held a reception and informal discussion on the future of the program, which centers on ambitious goals of expanding and creating new programs over the next five years. Held in Lansing on December 6, the event brought together more than 100 people from all over the state, many of whom have been deeply involved with Michigan Saves since its inception, and a number of key partners who install the financed home and building improvements.

“I marvel at Michigan Saves’ growth,” said Tom Stanton, formerly a staff member at the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). During his time at the MPSC, Stanton helped lead the charge to create a Michigan-based organization focusing on breaking down barriers to much-needed energy projects.”

“Michigan Saves has evolved into an organized powerhouse in the area of energy financing,” he added

Now that the model has been proven successful, and Michigan Saves is shaping the future of how people take control of their energy, the organization is doubling down and expanding their reach so that even more Michiganders can benefit from safer, more comfortable spaces with smaller utility bills.

I have been working with Michigan Saves to help people and businesses meet their energy needs for a number of years now. Their attractive financing offers give us a competitive advantage—they help us do more for our customers and invest in our own growth. That means more staff, better training, and healthier bottom lines. We are so thankful for Michigan Saves. It’s a win for everyone.
